Here’s a razzle dazzle, super-fun “upcycling” project that’s a perfect DIY for kids – rainbow name crayons! And, what a special, personal gift to create someone’s name in all colors of the rainbow?! We used a letter mold, but you might already have heart molds for Valentine’s, Christmas shapes, flower molds and many more. Here’s the best part – everything else we needed to create these fun rainbow name crayons we found in our junk drawers.
And as far as an easy peasy kids’ craft? Rainbow name crayons knock it out of the park…easy set up, no expensive materials, recycles the old and worn into something exciting (and useful)…AND they make a crazy fun gift. Win, win, win…win! Plus, kids can stay busy taking off the papers and breaking crayons into small pieces for at least 10-15 minutes (make yourself a cup of coffee and check out Pinterest ; )
Looking for easy, purposeful recycling for kids? This one’s for you!
To be honest, we’re not always the trendiest crafters on the block. Oooh, we love art and design, hot glue and exploration. And sure, sometimes we encourage the kiddos to go wild with the glitter, popsicle sticks and pompoms. But our favorite craft accomplishments typically elicit bigger thinking – originality of design or engineering), encouraging an attitude of gratitude, or repurposing something old. Actually, the repurposing goal is what intrigued us about these cute rainbow name crayons.
Want to give these a try? Find our tutorial below. It couldn’t be easier!
How to make tie-dyed, personalized, rainbow name crayons:
Materials:
- Molds of your choice (we used a silicone letter mold)
- Crayons, with the wrappers removed and broken into small pieces
- Baking sheet with sides
- Oven, set to 225ºF
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 225ºF.
- Place the mold on top of a baking sheet to catch any melted wax that drips from your mold. (Hey, better safe than sorry, right?)
- Fill the molds with crayon bits. We experimented with many color combinations!
- Bake for about 20 minutes, or until crayons have melted completely. Carefully remove from oven.
- Let the crayons cool completely.
- Gently pop the crayons out of the mold and enjoy!
Happy coloring!
