Re-running this post on how to make a May Day basket for the upcoming holiday! Will you be lacing up your sneakers this year?

May Day is definitely on our “Top 5 ” list of favorite holidays. Cute little baskets full of treats and surprises on your doorstep? What’s not to like?
I’ve seen some pretty amazing May Day baskets – surely you have, too! But, you don’t have to get fancy to join in the May Day fun. Our family’s favorite DIY May baskets are made with scrapbook paper, popcorn, pre-wrapped candies and love. 🙂
What is a May Day basket?
I grew up thinking May Day festivities were standard holiday fare. Until a few years ago when I was telling a friend about our May Day baskets and she looked at me like I was nuts. (Is the May Day basket tradition a Midwestern thing?)
For our family, we’ve always kept May Day celebrations super simple. We make homemade baskets and fill them with goodies (popcorn, candies, homemade treats, flowers, etc) for our neighbors and friends. Then comes the fun part…the giving. To properly deliver a May Day basket in our family, you have to be fast. The idea is to drop off your basket, ring the doorbell, and be gone before the recipient finds the goodies. If you get caught, you get kissed! It’s a fun little tradition that always gets a rise with the kids.
Does your family celebrate May Day?
We’ve made homemade May Day baskets a few different ways over the years. The below method is a family favorite, because it’s so easy to whip up. I love the little paper handles because they hang onto the knob of a front door so nicely (which keeps the popcorn in). The kids appreciate how easily they can customize their baskets with various colors, prints and adornments.
