Knitting something out of jumbo yarn is so satisfying! One of the most stylish pieces you can craft using giant needles is a comfy, chunky knit throw blanket. In just a few hours during an afternoon, you can complete this on-trend, Pinterest-worthy project that showcases your skills and notches up your home decor.
If you are new to “knitting in the large,” a chunky knit throw blanket is a great beginner project. You’ll love the end result, too! Knitting with giant needles and giant yarn is a full body workout too! Stay hydrated. Take breaks. Have fun!
For the project pictured, I used 8 skeins of Red Heart Irresistible in Oatmeal. It is a great option if you are on a budget. Full price is typically $12.99 per skein, but by watching sales and using coupons, the cost can total significantly less. Jumbo yarn is getting easier to find, especially through online retailers. A few of my favorite brands are Loopy Mango, Ohhio, and Wool and the Gang.
To knit this throw, you need to be able to:
- Cast on
- Slip a stitch knit-wise
- Knit
- Purl
- Bind Off
Notes:
- The blanket is worked in back and forth rows. A circular needle is needed to accommodate the large size.
- To create a professional-looking edge on your blanket, slip the first stitch knitwise at the beginning of each row, then continuing with the written pattern below. Not into trying it? No worries. Your blanket will be beautiful.
- Continuing with a new skein in the middle of a project using jumbo yarn can be challenging. But have no fear. There are many ways to join, the simplest being tying the two ends of yarn together and weaving in the ends. For my blanket, I used a technique called the “Russian Join.” You can check out the technique [How to Russian Join Yarn in 7 Easy Steps – Lion Brand Notebook].
