Are you craving some good comfort food recipes this week? Comfort food. It has that name for a reason.
Some of us hunker down in the kitchen on stressful days, making – and eating – foods that leave us feeling good, comfortable, and satisfied. For us, that means homemade breads, soups, or dishes like chicken and noodles and pot roast….and most any sweet or chocolate dessert. I guess it reminds us of being young and cared for by mom and drawing strength and confidence within the warmth of her kitchen.
If you’re finding yourself in your kitchen, maybe with your kids, give some of those good comfort food recipes a try!
Our top list of delicious comfort food recipes to try!
Below is a list of some of our favorites. Our list includes what our loved ones love most – wholesome and hearty soups, warm and aromatic snacks, and sweet treats!
A quick note: we know this is an unusual time for grocery shopping. So most of the recipes in our list are easy to make and call for ingredients you can find in your pantry. But don’t fret if you don’t have a particular ingredient on hand. Here are a few swaps we use as needed:
- Don’t have fresh herbs? Dry herbs work too. Use about 1/2 to 2/3 as much of dry herbs as you would the fresh version.
- Don’t have buttermilk? To make our handy “homemade buttermilk recipe” add 1 Tbs vinegar to 1 cup of milk (and let rest for a few minutes)
- Don’t have fresh lemon/lime/citrus juice or zest? Swap fresh-squeezed citrus juice for bottled orange juice. Or, leave this ingredient out.
- Don’t have baking soda or baking powder? Read this.
- Don’t have an ingredient like onion, carrots, celery, peppers, etc? It’s okay to leave these ingredients out when you must. Yes, these ingredients add flavor and texture, and definitely benefit the recipe. But you know, every meal doesn’t have to be stunningly perfect. Make what your family will eat and enjoy the together time!
Now, shall we eat?! What are your (and your family’s) comfort food cravings?
If you’re craving piping hot soup and fill-your-house-with-warmth good comfort food recipes, you might try some of our favorite soups and chili.
These soups are packed with flavor and texture, and fill your kitchen with home-cooking goodness as they simmer away all day. We don’t usually get too fussy about soups and chilis, or anything we toss into the slow cooker. Instead, we start with the flavors that we (and our loved ones) like best, and we build from there. Ease of prep, and homey comfort…that’s why soups and chilis rank high on our list of good comfort food recipes.
Soul-Warming Homemade Chicken Soup.
Good comfort food recipes can be polarizing, it’s true. Some favor this, others prefer that. But when it comes to chicken soup, it seems everyone can agree – that’s comfort. With a flavorful base, tender tortellini and a garnish of lemon and dill, this recipe might be one your family would love to try.
Quick-to-Fix Creamy Chicken, Mushroom, and Wild Rice Soup.
Inspired by the creamy chicken and rice soup at Panera Bread, this is a favorite recipe of ours! We love the earthy mushrooms and wild rice, and our kids love the creamy texture. Also included at this link is a quick step-by-step to convert your soup recipe (this one or your own personal favorite) from a stovetop method to the slow cooker.
We wrote in the original post that we make this at least once a week. We still do. The kids love it, we love it, leftovers are good (as-is, or on top chili-fries, chili-dogs, taco salad, chili-mac, nachos…we’e been known to get creative. 😉 )
Our favorite comfort-food snack recipes. Because we don’t know about you…but we are snacking!
Since we’ve been home each evening instead of racing off to practices and activities, we’ve found ourselves enjoying game nights and family time more and more! And when we’re gaming and snuggling up for movies, we need a snack, right? Check out these recipes and see if they deliver the salty/sweet flavors you’re craving.
Warning: this recipe is dangerously addictive. The peanut butter/chocolate combo is a forever favorite, and those crunchy textures? Winner. If you’re a real Monster Cookie monster (like us), and you need a little more indulgence…give the bar form a go. Enough said?
This is a recipe created and made famous by an RBF contributor. It’s kid-friendly, customizable, and awesome. And it’s perfect for game night or movie snuggles. Make it tonight!
Some of our favorite comfort foods come in the form of hand-held, crumbly muffins.
Mmmmm…muffins. We can’t get enough of a good muffin recipe. Why? They’re fast to prep, easy to make, boast the most delicious flavors, and come on…they’re hand-held and totally portable. (Even if it’s just upstairs!) Here are two of our favorite RBF originals. Simply delicious.
Whole Wheat Cranberry Muffins with Walnut Crumb Topping.
If you want a good muffin, but you’re also feeling a little healthy. 😉 The tart pops of cranberry are so bright and just right, and the walnut crumb topping is perfect for pinching.
A Feel-Good Strawberry Muffin.
Originally developed as a way to use a heaping pile of fresh strawberries, this recipe has since become a springtime family fav. The lovely little muffins are great fresh-from-the-oven, with a smear of softened butter, or a drizzle of honey.
Good comfort food recipes to beat them all? Sweet treats the family will scramble for.
If we’re honest…this is always our favorite category, no matter if we’re talking comfort foods or any foods. Whether it’s homemade pies (or almost pies – like our “did we win” berry crumble), cookies, bars, or breads…we’re team “sweet” all the way.
One-bowl, Bakery-style Brownies.
Half brownie, half chocolate torte…so, so much chocolate. These brownies aren’t your classic, crackle-top cake-y squares. This recipe makes a super fudgy brownie reminiscent of the brownies I used to get at our favorite neighborhood bakery. Word to my fellow chocolate-lovers: make sure you’ve got a little milk handy.
Berry Crumble, the “Pie” for Non-Bakers.
This recipe is a favorite for our kids – they love to prep it all on their own. The finished crumble is delicious – especially if you add a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. And, what’s better? You can make it with frozen fruit from the freezer!
Mom’s Classic Chocolate Chippers.
At our house, chocolate chip cookies are an absolute, all-time FAVORITE comfort food. Had a bad day? Cookies. Have a reason to celebrate? Cookies. Need something fun to whip up? Cookies. These are just like the chocolate chip cookies my sibs and I loved as kids – crispy-edged, chewy-centered, studded with chips (and nuts), these huge, flat, classic cookies are a thing of love. (And if you’re feeling ambitious…they make a really fab homemade ice cream cookie sandwich.)
